The 2026 Formula 1 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the new terminology that will be used to explain the intricate details of its new 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is arguably the most significant regulation change in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, drivers will carefully oversee ERS energy – potentially on flying laps – to secure the peak result.

Broad surveys were carried out with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terminology would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the competition as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the active aerodynamics – have been abandoned in favour of straightforward terms that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that competitors will have increased agency to make decisions regarding battery management, harvesting, and saving energy.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to improve the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a car is within one second the leading car to assist with an overtake.
  • Power Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the ERS that can be utilized during attack or defence. It grants the pilot peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings adjust their angles – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and top speed, and sealing in the turns for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only reduced throttle is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Aerodynamic drag has been cut by 40%. The vehicles will utilize active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straights to improve speed and increase straightline speed and return into place for peak handling.

Wheels will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical under present rules.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive component that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, manufactured from plant-based materials or synthetic production methods.
