Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The White House withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources claiming the president had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would simply constitute a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before reports that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he added.
