The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
