A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before running away.

The reason of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have been made, police said.

How It Happened

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a building near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report said.

CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and officers have been following their trail to find their destination," added an official.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," she said.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the citizens to not sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.

Beyond his role as a presenter, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, providing elite guarding services and protecting major functions across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in property reclaimations.

His murder has sent the nation reeling and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the government and various organizations.

A senior figure remarked he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.

"He spoke his truth fearlessly and impartially. He even criticized me and my policies as a public official. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," he stated.

A political leader stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A media executive expressed that "Stock was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his influence "will live on".

South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the globally elevated murder rates, fuelled by robberies and organized criminal activity, with some dozens of citizens losing their lives per day in a recent six-month period, according to official statistics.
