The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
