The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and a second season already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
