The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
