The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new flavor within an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder indicated that he will create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries that its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
