The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Citizens have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent representative involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population want the war to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported additional dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south, health workers stated.
