A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background assisted us verify the footage.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the images were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
